Meet the Co-Hosts of APAO 2018

This year, the annual APAO Congress is lucky to have not one, but two local co-hosts. Read on to learn more about these two important ophthalmic organizations in Hong Kong.4dcf3528-db0a-4469-8666-2814f82aa77c.jpg

The Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society (HKOS) was established with the objectives to maintain and upgrade the quality of eye care in Hong Kong and to foster brotherhood among eye care professionals serving the public in Hong Kong. As an APAO member society, HKOS is represented by Dr. Dexter Leung on the APAO Council.

b4f2532d-7cae-46ee-8415-9e07c4318f0d.pngThe primary role of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong (COHK) is to set and maintain professional standards to ensure the safety of patients and to provide them with the best possible medical care. This is achieved through structured training, examinations, continuous medical education and by influencing the healthcare policy in Hong Kong.

Welcome Message from HKOS and COHK Presidents

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are delighted to serve as your hosts during the 33rd APAO Congress, which is held in conjunction with the 29th Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium. Organized jointly by the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society and the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong, this 4-day APAO meeting is truly a conference not to be missed.

We are honored to have more than 600 renowned specialists in ophthalmology and visual sciences from the Asia-Pacific region and beyond who will share their expertise on new and creative treatments, techniques and technologies in the field.

In addition to the excellent scientific symposia, instruction courses, free paper presentations and wet lab sessions, we have also organized exciting social events to make the APAO 2018 Congress unique and memorable:

• APAO 2018 Charity Run. For beautiful views of Hong Kong’s famed Victoria Harbor, walk or run along the Central and Western Promenade during the early morning APAO Charity Run on Saturday, February 10, 2017. Your participation will support APAO educational programs and other worthy charitable causes.

• APAO 2018 Gala Dinner. Experience the best of Hong Kong cuisine alongside magnificent evening views of the Hong Kong skyline, including the harbor front light show, during the Gala Dinner on Saturday, February 10, 2017.

We hope that you will enjoy your time at the APAO 2018 Congress. Do be sure to take the opportunity to explore Hong Kong and its unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures.

The Gala Dinner of the 33rd Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress in Hong Kong will be held on the evening of Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This year’s festive theme will be the Lunar New Year, which begins on Friday, February 16. Say goodbye to the Year of the Monkey and celebrate 2018, the Year of the Dog, according to the Chinese zodiac. At the Gala Dinner, attendees can enjoy delicious Chinese cuisine and immerse themselves in this exciting holiday celebration.

In addition to a special performance, the Gala Dinner will also feature the presentation of the APAO Distinguished Service Awards, APAO Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Awards and APAO Achievement Awards.

Delegates who have registered and paid for the APAO 2018 Congress will soon be able to purchase tickets to the Gala Dinner online through the Congress system. More details will be available in due course.

New Member Societies Joining APAO 2018

A total of 5 new APAO member societies will be sending official representatives to the APAO Congress for the first time at APAO 2018 in Hong Kong. In this newsletter, we feature the Lao Ophthalmological Society (LOS) and the Pacific Eye-Care Society (PacEYES), two new region-based APAO Associate Members.

Established in 2006, LOS is currently under the direction of Prof. Dr. Vithoune Visonnavong (pictured) as president, Dr. Khamphoua Southisombath as vice president and Dr. Phetsamone Indara as secretary. LOS is a member of the Asian Ophthalmology Society (AOS) and the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO).

PacEYES is unique because its members reside in several different island nations in the Pacific, but the society is based in Fiji. Dr. Elenoa Matoto-Raikabakaba was recently elected as the new PacEYES president.

For shopping enthusiasts, Hong Kong is truly a paradise, with countless shopping malls and designer boutiques. The city is also home to several computer centers offering all types of electronic goods. Hong Kong’s many street markets offer visitors another unique shopping experience.

For clothes, accessories and souvenirs, check out Stanley Market in the Southern District or Ladies’ Market in Mong Kok in the afternoon. Similar items can be found at Temple Street Night Market in Jordan, which opens later in the day, though it also features popular outdoor restaurants, Chinese fortune tellers and karaoke.

Located near Temple Street is the Jade Market, two buildings that are home to countless stalls selling jade, pearls and many other types of semi-precious stones. Shoppers can also find mahjong sets, chess boards and cloisonné trinkets for sale here.

The Yuen Po Street Bird Garden and the Flower Market are both located in Prince Edward. Although they sell items mainly for residents rather than tourists, they are both worth a visit. With beautiful tropical flowers of many varieties and birds of all kinds, these markets have a wonderful atmosphere of unique sights and sounds.

No matter where you choose to shop in Hong Kong, don’t forget to bring along some Hong Kong dollars, though Chinese renminbi may be accepted at some locations. And when shopping in the markets, don’t forget to bargain with the vendors to get a better price!
